A mechanical voice describes the scene in painstaking detail: <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>\u2026a makeshift roof runs with a slight divergence (toward the right) from the greatest angle of slope. There are seven windows beneath it, extending down to the lower visible edge of the balcony\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_0568-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"streetcam\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2042\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_0568-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_0568-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><br \/>\nThe camera can see pedestrians, and incorporates them into the narrative that it constructs:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>On the street, the pedestrian has disappeared. There is no one visible outside the building. No construction crew is working in this sector, for the moment.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_1498-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"streetmonitor\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2045\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_1498-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_1498-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><br \/>\nAnother camera in the room makes recordings of the rest of the gallery, again through a set of venetian blinds. It is looking for a woman, of a specific demographic:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Her lips are freshly made up &#8211; the lipstick color the same as their natural color, a trifle deeper, and her carefully brushed hair gleams in the light from the window when she turns her head.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_1470-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"gallerycam\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2047\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_1470-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_1470-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another pair of cameras watches two monitors. The monitors play back a conversation between a man and a woman \u2013 a conversation that took place inside the same room that the cameras are now in, with the remnants of the conversation still present in the form of chairs, a table, drinks, and the camera that recorded them.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t  <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/110494877\" width=\"480\" height=\"368\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_0556-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"chaircam\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2050\" srcset=\"http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_0556-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/jamescoupe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/IMG_0556-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A large monitor is on the wall at the end of the room. From there the mechanical voice of the narrator emerges, with subtitles over footage that is taken from each of the cameras. The combined footage mixes live and pre-recorded video, a non-linear assemblage that repeats, loops and contradicts itself. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t  <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/110494878\" width=\"480\" height=\"368\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The room is sealed off, and none of its elements can be seen as an entirety. It is a room for obsession, possessiveness, suspicion, a room that denies any sense of completeness.
